We didn’t believe that writing a story for being at a restaurant could be a thing. Everybody can book a table, open the menu, order a dish, pay the bill and leave. But sometimes it is more than that – sometimes it is an experience – a touch with the people behind “the plate”. An interaction with the backstage of a play. We want to thank Subenshi for their hospitality and for changing the game of how we look at sushi.
Now that we are officially residents of Portugal since we’ve moved to Aveiro last month, we have also started to explore what the “small Venice” has to offer. Apart from the remarkable tiles architecture, the colorful boats sailing across the vast network of picturesque canals around the city, and the historical salt lakes, there is a lot more going on around that we could potentially do. And one of those things is exploring the broad choices of restaurants in the area.
As we are people who really enjoy getting their senses spoiled with great food, dining out in good quality restaurants is something we really appreciate doing. But knowing where to go can be a tough choice given the fact that there are dining rooms at every corner of the city, so picking a place can be a difficult decision. So we’ve decided to open our trustworthy Tripadvisor and see which place is rated the highest. So we’ve headed to Subenshi..

Once we’ve walked through that door we found ourselves in front of a gigantic aquarium with dozens of species of marine life. It was one of the three fish tanks that were present in the venue, but this one was the largest with approximately 9000 liters of salt water where all the sea creatures were living in harmony in a self-sustaining ecosystem as the staff kindly explained to us. It is not something that you see on a daily basis and it matched the whole concept of this semi-minimalism wooden interior with a touch of the Asian culture itself.

The staff gave us a short tour around the place so we could choose a table. The venue consisted of two dining sections – one with an open kitchen and more social atmosphere where as the other one felt more romantic especially once the night falls, so going there on a date would definitely be a killer! You can have a look at both areas and decide which one you like more. You can post on the comments below with your preference.

Unlike any other Sushi restaurants we’ve been, Subenshi gave us a jaw-dropping sensation the moment dishes started coming out of the kitchen. The versatile and unique sea food delights were not only well-prepared but also kindly served by well-trained professionals.

“Salmon Carpaccio” – thin slices of salmon, marinated with soy sauce, lemon and orange, topped with chives

Enjoying crunchy prawns with rolled almonds
We also wanted to take a closer look at the sushi sets before dismantling the whole plate.

Unique variety of flavors and ingredients that left a long aftertaste sensation
After spending an unforgettable evening, we left the venue with warm feelings for the staff and the owners who managed to deliver a unique experience of this fantastic atmosphere and food prepared with lots of care and local ingredients to support sustainable and local economic growth. It was not only the cuisine that impressed us, but also the hospitality of the kindhearted staff that led us peek behind their story and the whole fairy tale called “Subenshi”, because we believe that a restaurant should be more than just food – it should be an experience and this is what they managed to deliver.
